Cables are manufactured for each customer and can include specific application specific wire quantities and sizes, insulation and armor coatings, allowing each cable to have a different diameter. The finished cable is directly wound on a large drum and sent out from the production line through wire drawing, wrapping, and winding machines. This operation is controlled by PLC and sends 0-10V control signals to two “dumb” AC motor drivers: one controls the rotation of the drum and the other controls lateral movement. However, before each winding process, the operator must first manually calculate using chart and table data to input into the PLC program to illustrate specific cable sizes and feed rates. Centrilift has decided to review the process to see if it can improve efficiency.
